The Higher Self : What is it, Why does it Matter, and How do we Connect?

Sitting in a yoga class, or reading a self help book the term Higher Self was used. "What is the Higher Self and how do I know if I'm connected to it," might have been the question that popped to mind. Or maybe the concept is clear but how is the connection made or why is it even important?

The Higher Self also known as the Soul, Holy Spirit, Divine Spirit, and higher consciousness is essentially You. It is a level of consciousness that has experienced it all. Lets say in a place where time has no effect, consciousness has the ability to live every moment: past, present, and future, every possible moment even ones not decided yet. Let's even go as far as to say, every possible life the soul has and will ever experience. It is the purest form of the Soul. The one with all the answers and truths because it sees it all; ever connection possibly made. Yes in ways it is God like because of it's all in knowing, but it is not God because it is You. It is the essence of all the energy that makes up You. Where God is the essence of all the energy that makes up everything.

In the beginning it may seem impossible to connect and actually feel as if no significant knowledge was achieved. To be honest the biggest obstacle will be quieting the mind. Taught at a young age a quiet mind is not a productive mind, it may take some time to rewire the mind that it is okay to be silent. The use of tools can be transforming as they help focus the mind on one or two things, not yet quiet but at least it is getting there. Some will find the connection comes easy when involving the body such as the many forms of yoga, mindful breathing, doing Line Activations (a technique taught by Ashley Wood), going for a walk, playing an instrument, or simply bringing the mind back into mindless daily routines like brushing your teeth, doing the dishes, folding laundry, etc. Others will find moving the body too distracting, to focus the mind the mind needs a single task; a single point of focus. Try engaging the mind with a guided meditation, journaling, oracle cards, daily devotions, reading something of inspiration or prayer. Lastly other's will need silence to focus, those that fall in this category will want to set aside time to meditate. Bringing other elements can also help, such as working with the stars, the Akashic Records, Reiki Energy, crystals, herbs, and/or the elements: fire, wind, earth, and water. The goal is to create a ritual and routine around connecting with the Higher Self. Have fun, if it feels like work then it is not the right path, try something new. What works for some may not work for others, and that's okay. As the energy becomes a familiar friend, the need for tools, rituals, and routines will become less and less. The end goal is to walk every step with the embodiment of the Higher Self.

Signs of connection: peace in the body, release of tension and stress, creativity, inspiration, pure bliss or happiness, a deep knowing, messages, visions, following purpose, compassion for the self and others, respect of energy, understanding of connection and it's importance, unconditional love, and living for experience. Connecting to the Higher Self will be unique in nature because no energy truly is identical. How we find connection will also lead us to our interests and passions, the very skills we have brought to this life. Be kind to yourself as you explore self discovery, be curious, and accepting.
